Happy Gas (Nitrous oxide)

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as “happy gas,” is a safe and mild sedative used to help patients feel calm and relaxed during dental procedures. It is inhaled through a small mask, creating a light, soothing sensation that quickly wears off, allowing patients to resume normal activities after their appointment.

What to expect

Helping the little ones feel comfortable at the dentist

We recommend that infants either accompany their older siblings or parents so that they become used to the dental practice environment. Their first few visits is just playtime, while the rest of the family are treated, and then graduating to rides in the dental chair and if we are lucky we get to have a quick look at their teeth! There are plenty of little toys and even a TV on the ceiling to play their favourite shows. We even have rewards that we give them at the end of these visits. We do find that when they are ready for their first “real” check-up at 4 they are relaxed (and usually very excited!)

Building healthy habits for school aged kids

During their early years at school there is an emphasis on keeping the baby teeth healthy and functional and the permanent teeth decay free, through 6 monthly check-ups when the teeth are cleaned, fluoride applied and the children taught good brushing (and flossing) techniques. We also recommend sealing deep fissures which are prone to decay with a preventative treatment called ‘fissure seals’.
To encourage patients and parents to maintain these preventative practices we have decided to offer children 12 and under “no gap” check-ups.

Frequently Asked
Questions

Do you accept all private health funds?
Crows Nest Dentists accepts all private health funds. We process all of the claims through HICAPS. Please speak to our friendly staff at reception before your appointment to discuss your private health and remember to present your card!
Yes! As well as with x-rays in the dental chair, we also offer on-site OPG dental X-rays, saving you the hassle of having to go to a separate X-ray clinic. These X-rays allow us to diagnose jaw problems immediately, including wisdom teeth problems, reducing the need for a second consult appointment.
Using CEREC technology, we can prepare and manufacture your crowns, caps and even bridges in-house. This saves you the stress of having to return for a second appointment. You also no longer have to worry about temporary crowns ever again.
When we determine that your wisdom teeth need to be removed, an OPG is taken (x-ray that rotates around your face showing all your teeth flattened into one image). This will show the roots of the wisdom teeth and their relation to the lower jaw nerve, allowing the dentist to decide on the best way ahead. Either a referral will be made to a specialist or a simple surgery will be planned here in the chair.
