How does Invisalign work?
Invisalign is a popular modern orthodontic treatment for those looking to straighten their teeth without the noticeable appearance of metal braces. But how exactly does Invisalign work? Here’s a breakdown of the Invisalign treatment process you can expect to follow at Crows Nest Dentists:
1. It starts with your first Invisalign consultation:
At your first appointment with us at Crows Nest Dentists, a certified Invisalign provider, we will examine your teeth, take X-rays and impressions and discuss your treatment goals with you in detail. It’s so important to us that you are comfortable with the process ahead and that your expectations are set regarding the future results. Delivering you the best results is our number one priority.
2. A tailored Invisalign treatment plan
After your first appointment, we use the information gathered to create a detailed treatment plan. This plan includes a virtual representation of how your teeth will move throughout the course of your treatment. This will also include whether we need to add special attachments to your teeth and whether small amounts of polishing between the teeth is needed to make space for the movements. The special attachments are like small buttons made of white filling material that are bonded to the teeth at the beginning of treatment to help tooth movement. These are then polished off at the end of treatment.
3. Creating customised Invisalign aligners
Once we’ve completed and agreed on your treatment plan, we will use the information gathered from your previous visit to create a series of custom-fit invisible aligners. Each aligner has been specifically designed to move your teeth in a certain way, to gradually straighten your teeth over time.
4. Wearing your Invsialign aligners
In order to see results, you will need to wear each set of your aligners for for 1 week before switching to the next set. The length of treatment can range from as little as 4 to as many as 18 months, depending on your unique circumstances.
5. Monitoring the progress of your Invisalign treatment
To ensure that the treatment is working effectively and as it should be, you will need to visit us every 4-6 weeks to check up on your progress and to get your next set of aligners. These progress appointments may also involve small amounts of polishing between the teeth to make space for movement, if that is what the treatment plan required.
6. Post-treatment maintenance
After you have completed treatment, you will then move into the retention phase, which requires you to wear a set of retainers at night to maintain the new position of your teeth. You may decide to also have special wires bonded behind your front teeth to maintain their position, almost as an insurance policy. Too easy!
What can Invisalign be used to treat?
Invisalign can be used to treat a range of dental issues including:
- Crowded teeth
- An overbite
- An underbite
- A crossbite
- An open-bite
- Gap teeth
You might be considering Invisalign if you just want generally straighter teeth. Also remember: straighter teeth are easier to keep clean, with less plaque accumulation. Invisalign can therefore reduce your risk of tooth decay, gingivitis and advanced gum disease.
What are the Benefits of Invisalign
Invisalign is more comfortable to wear than braces
Invisalign aligners are made of a clear, BPA-free plastic material that is custom-fit to your teeth, making them much more comfortable to wear than metal braces.
Unlike braces, Invisalign aligners are removable during treatment
Invisalign aligners are removable and designed to be worn for about 22 hours a day, which means you can take them out to eat, brush, and floss your teeth. Not only does this make it easier to maintain good oral hygiene, but it allows you to enjoy your favorite foods without restrictions. Say goodbye to getting annoying bits of food stuck in your braces.
Invisalign offers faster treatment than braces
While traditional braces can take up to 2-3 years to straighten your teeth, Invsalign treatment typically takes between 4-18 months. Think about not only how much treatment time you’ll be saving, but how much quicker you’ll be achieving results!
Invisalign are easier to clean than braces
Invisalign aligners are easy to clean with a gentle brush and soap. And since they can be removed, it is easy to keep both the aligners and teeth clean.
Invisalign are less noticeable than braces
Invisalign aligners are nearly invisible, making them a great option for individuals who want to straighten their teeth without the noticeable appearance of metal braces.
Invisalign offers you better opportunity for dental hygiene than braces
Invisalign can help with your oral hygiene, as you can remove the aligners to brush and floss your teeth. This can help prevent tooth decay and gum disease, which can be a common problem associated with traditional metal braces.

Frequently Asked
Questions
Do you accept all private health funds?
Crows Nest Dentists accepts all private health funds. We process all of the claims through HICAPS. Please speak to our friendly staff at reception before your appointment to discuss your private health and remember to present your card!
Do you perform dental X-rays onsite?
Yes! As well as with x-rays in the dental chair, we also offer on-site OPG dental X-rays, saving you the hassle of having to go to a separate X-ray clinic. These X-rays allow us to diagnose jaw problems immediately, including wisdom teeth problems, reducing the need for a second consult appointment.
What are single visit crowns?
Using CEREC technology, we can prepare and manufacture your crowns, caps and even bridges in-house. This saves you the stress of having to return for a second appointment. You also no longer have to worry about temporary crowns ever again.
Do you perform wisdom tooth extractions?
When we determine that your wisdom teeth need to be removed, an OPG is taken (x-ray that rotates around your face showing all your teeth flattened into one image). This will show the roots of the wisdom teeth and their relation to the lower jaw nerve, allowing the dentist to decide on the best way ahead. Either a referral will be made to a specialist or a simple surgery will be planned here in the chair.
