What are the best methods for teeth whitening?

In-chair whitening

Teeth whitening is a process that aims to make teeth look whiter and brighter by removing stains and discoloration. There are many methods of teeth whitening available which can make it difficult knowing which option is right for you.
The most common method is the use of bleaching agents, such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide, to whiten teeth. These agents work by breaking down the stains embedded deep within the enamel crystals of your teeth, thereby bleaching the enamel and making them appear brighter.

Professional teeth whitening is performed at a dental practice and while typically more expensive than home whitening kits, offers patients the best results. In-chair whitening tends to deliver faster and more effective results. This is due to the use of a stronger whitening agent and a specialised light or laser to enhance the effectiveness of the treatment. During the treatment, a dentist will apply the bleaching agent to the patient’s teeth and use a light over a series of intervals (normally four 15 minute blocks) to achieve the best results.
Teeth whitening may not be suitable for everyone and the benefit of in-chair whitening is that you’ll be consulting with your dentist who can help determine whether it’s appropriate. You’ll also be working closely with your dentist to manage any sensitivity or discomfort that you may experience during and after the teeth whitening process.
Another benefit of in-chair whitening is the opportunity that a patient has to work with their dentist to determine the level of brightness that they’d like to achieve. Not everyone wants a Hollywood white smile, and in-chair whitening provides a great opportunity to find a look that’s right for you. Whether it’s a subtler whiter smiler or a bolder look that you’re hoping to achieve, in-chair whitening offers a level of control that can be difficult to achieve with other teeth whitening methods.

Take-home kits for teeth whitening

Teeth whitening can be done at home using a dental take home whitening kit or over-the-counter products such as whitening toothpaste, strips or gels. At-home kits are a popular option as it can be done in the comfort of your own home and is generally a cheaper option than in-chair whitening. However, results can vary from product to product and it can often take longer to see results compared to professional treatment.
A take home kit from a dentist will generally include a whitening gel, fitted mouth trays and instructions for use. The benefit of consulting with your dentist versus buying teeth whitening products from a retailer is that you can identify and minimise any issues that may arise. For example, people with sensitive teeth or gum disease may need to follow slightly different instructions to ensure they do not cause any irritation or damage.

How much does teeth whitening cost

Cost of in-chair whitening

The cost of teeth whitening can vary depending on a number of factors including the type of whitening treatment you choose.
In-chair teeth whitening at a dental practice can typically cost between $800 and $1,200, depending on the severity of your staining, the whitening system used and the quality of the dental practice that you’re visiting.

Cost of take-home whitening kits

As take-home whitening kits can be purchased from a dentist or an independent retailer, pricing can vary quite significantly.
For professional take-home whitening kits which typically include custom-fitted whitening trays and a supply of whitening gel, the cost is approximately $500 – $800. The cost of this will depend on the quality of the kit and the dentist that you choose to visit.

Natural remedies for teeth whitening

You may find a number of natural remedies online that are recommended as ways to whiten teeth. For example, these may include brushing your teeth with baking soda, and apple cider vinegar. These remedies can be less expensive, however they can also be abrasive to tooth enamel and wear it down. Also, results from these are likely to take longer to achieve and be less effective.

Yes! As well as with x-rays in the dental chair, we also offer on-site OPG dental X-rays, saving you the hassle of having to go to a separate X-ray clinic. These X-rays allow us to diagnose jaw problems immediately, including wisdom teeth problems, reducing the need for a second consult appointment.
Using CEREC technology, we can prepare and manufacture your crowns, caps and even bridges in-house. This saves you the stress of having to return for a second appointment. You also no longer have to worry about temporary crowns ever again.
When we determine that your wisdom teeth need to be removed, an OPG is taken (x-ray that rotates around your face showing all your teeth flattened into one image). This will show the roots of the wisdom teeth and their relation to the lower jaw nerve, allowing the dentist to decide on the best way ahead. Either a referral will be made to a specialist or a simple surgery will be planned here in the chair.
